HARMONY METHOD

LEARN CHORDS & HARMONY FIRST

traditional piano

Traditional piano methods do not teach harmony or chords. Instead, most blindly take a student through the music “grades” and note reading. Most piano teachers have no idea of so many important aspects of REAL music making.

IT EXPLAINS WHY SO MANY GREAT MUSICIANS ARE SELF-TAUGHT.

Students often lack an understanding of chords and tuning systems we hear in our music every day, which generally produces very poor results, except for the most talented. It’s why so many people give up playing piano.

Our courses are designed to give you flexibility in an inspiring environment. Contact Us now or call Caitlin to discuss your course options.

7 chord secret

The “7-chord secret” embedded in our Harmony Method will remedy this in just a few lessons. After just one HARMONY METHOD tutorial, you’ll be able to play a famous Beatles tune or “Cannon in D” and figure out thousands of songs by ear. Pick out your favourite tunes and play the chordal structures in no time, gaining real value and enjoyment from your music lessons, with a broader and better music education.

As you begin to understand how to use our ‘musical systems’, you will BE INSPIRED on your musical journey and find real JOY when playing your musical instruments.

To form the team, Tom Donald carefully selects some of London’s most outstanding pianists and coaches, most notably Siwan Rhys and Alberto Ferro.

PIANO TECHNIQUE

  • Piano technique should come first, before reading music.
  • Developing piano technique can actually be very enjoyable and relaxing, practising the right exercises and music that will make your hands more relaxed yet stronger
  • Reading music should be taught as a natural pattern, like written language – not a confusing intellectual exercise
  • If listening and the ear, is not part of the learning process than there is very little result
  • Great composers often wrote music for an educational purpose. Let’s use this wonderful music to learn and stop reserving it only for advanced pianists
  • Scales are only a small part of learning piano technique, there is so much more.
  • Theory mostly involves training the ear to listen. This can be taught to a young child just like language

CLASSICAL PIANO

Classical Piano Music is expressive, mind enhancing and rich in culture, history and philosophy.

The Piano is a classical instrument, with an incredible ability to play all styles of music and piano training really should reflect this. Students should be taught to engage with the piano and learn to control their fingers, hands, wrist, arms and shoulders accordingly, which can only be achieved with the best technical training and music selection.

THE GREAT COMPOSERS

Bach, Mozart, Beethoven, Schubert, Chopin, Rachmaninov, Debussy, Ravel are among the great piano teachers. This is reflected in their piano compositions. Classical Piano repertoire is the most important choice a piano educator and teacher has to make for their student. In many cases, lack of practice by a piano student is a result of the wrong repertoire being chosen for the student.

PIANO EXAMS

You don’t need to practice many hours a day, instead, you need to learn how to practice to become a fine pianist. Taking piano exams for their own sake, teaches a piano student very little about playing the piano.

Whilst they are an important goal to aim for, Classical Piano Exams cover a small fraction of piano repertoire and should be used only as a measure of progress. Comprehensive, enjoyable music training involves far more repertoire and technique.

A MOVEMENT

We are not just a piano school, we are a movement with students from all over the world working 1 to 1 or online to gain a new understanding of music. Our group member sessions at the studio allow our students to spend time with like-minded, musical people, while our Facebook and WhatsApp groups are a great way to access support and exchange ideas with fellow students.

“I am a passionate music educator; I believe students of the pianoforte should be taught harmony immediately, even before reading music. Generally, learning music is a holistic, lifelong process. The teacher must be aware of this and have the piano repertoire and effective exercises to stimulate every aspect of music making. I use improvisation, harmony, and key changing exercises with my students as well as great wisdom from Bartok’s ‘Mikrokosmos’ to Bach’s ‘Inventions’, ‘Sinfonias’ and ‘Fugues’.
