Meet John Bochnowski
John is an American multi-instrumentalist, teacher, and producer with over a decade of eclectic musical experience across Detroit, Margate, and now London. He believes in blues, jazz, and gospel as a gateway into playing a wide range of styles. While he’s backed artists like Shana Wilson-Williams, Deelee Dubé, Doug Sides, and Kara Grainger in these traditional forms, he’s used this foundation to work with pop, rock, soul, and electronic artists such as Antwaun Stanley, Orbital, Jack Hues (of Wang Chung), and Jax Anderson. Experienced in the studio, he’s been a session musician for the Assemble Sound label and produced tracks featured on BBC Kent’s Introducing and Record of the Week programmes.

John's Bio...
As a teacher, John primarily works one-to-one with adult learners interested in improvisation and playing by ear to develop creative voice and musicianship, regardless of musical style. He also appreciates working with fellow composers and producers, helping them build the technical facility to explore their influences and realise artistic visions. In addition to teaching privately, John has taught courses and workshops for the University of Michigan’s youth programmes, the Duke Ellington Conservatoire (Detroit), the Ann Arbor Blues Society, and the Williams Syndrome Association.
John has extensive formal performance training, including a bachelor’s from the University of Michigan, a master’s from Canterbury Christ Church University, and modules with Berklee College of Music. However, he believes direct lineage and apprenticeship are the path to learning music. His mentors and tutors have included Barry Harris, Bob Hurst, Geri Allen, Barry Green, and Steve Waterman. He spent years playing organ and piano in Detroit’s Black churches, building musical fluency and professional skill under elder music directors and instrumentalists. Working in jazz and soul bands, he learned to play on the bandstand alongside individuals with decades of experience in the scene. This combination of formal training and practical experience informs not only everything he plays, but everything that he passes on to his students in lessons.
